With the emergence of the inkjet printer & archival inks, all artists are exploring new ways to produce their work. Pinhole Photography is photography at its most basic. The camera has no lens, no mirror, no meter, no viewfinder or optical components. Craig will demonstrate the fun of making the camera, planning the photograph & making the correct exposure. Making interesting images from a simple camera that you have built yourself is not only great fun but the results are very personal images & to a large extent intuitive, using a simple & direct process. It frees you from the technical chains of sophisticated lens and digital cameras with their predictable results. Pinhole photography allows you to rediscover the roots of traditional artistic methods. $375 Cost: $ 725.00. With Sandy King Seeing and Making Fine B&W Prints Emphasis on artistic expression during the whole of the workshop. Les will show his approach to using light to make landscape photographs. The first two days will involve an early start to catch the first light of the day. Darkroom work supervised by Les using his methods that include, split grade printing and single grade printing using graded papers, one and two bath print development, water bath print development, print contrast control using over and under exposure and development, pre and post flashing, f-stop printing using the RH Designs Stop Clock Pro compensating enlarger timer, selenium and gold toning including split toning and if time allows a session of lith printing. Emulsion Making and Coating The intent of this course is to pass on as much emulsion making and coating technology that be can to those devoted to conventional silver halide photography. To do this, Ron will be teaching the student how to make both contact and enlarging paper emulsions. The student will also learn how to make a slow camera speed (ISO ~25) emulsion and prepare and expose a paper negative. The workshop will include doctoring and doping emulsions with special chemicals to adjust curve shape, speed and coat ability. While doing so, the student will learn how to produce a contact paper similar to Azo, in grades of 1, 2 and 3, and a grade 1 and 2 enlarging speed paper. Cost: $ 825.00. With David Vestal and Al Weber. TBA Seeing Planning and Printing the Fine Photograph This workshop will explain a unified, consistent approach to photography from start to finish. We’ll have the opportunity to photograph the region, then to repair to the darkroom to develop negatives and print them. Bruce will demonstrate efficient and effective methods of printing in the Formulary's wonderful darkroom facility, and students will then have the opportunity to develop and print from their own negatives. In this intensive 5-day workshop you will learn the fundamentals of good exposure and development control for film-based black and white photography. We will make lots of photographs using a system called VIDEC to create a framework for successful photography. We will expose and develop a full test on a modern black and white film. We will learn how the negative and print go hand in hand. Any tested film can be used with any tested printing process: silver, platinum, cyanotype, and even digital.
