| Michael Stevenson - Originally established as Michael Stevenson Fine Art in 1990, and dealing in 19th and 20th century South African and south-east African art, the Michael Stevenson gallery opened its doors in May 2003 in a custom-designed space in Green Point, Cape Town. Since then, the gallery has hosted a series of widely acclaimed exhibitions, accompanied by catalogues, and has assembled a stable of leading contemporary South African artists, most of whom have numerous international commitments in 2005 and 2006.
Running until 3 December are Churchill Madikida: Status and Diane Victor: Smoke Portraits . In these new bodies of work, both artists tackle the pressing and emotive issue of HIV/Aids. In the main galleries Madikida exhibits major installations, two new video projections and related prints. The exhibition is a personal response to tragedy - his sister died earlier this year - and an attempt to raise awareness about Aids. In the front gallery Victor shows a series of moving and elegiac portraits of Aids sufferers made using the charcoal deposits of smoke.
