The "AFRAsculpture" is already part of a lifestyle… conceptual art, figurative and Imposed to the art critique by two monumental compositions, Aftenie assigns to his past activity other important works like "Mircea Eliade" bronze portrait in Toronto, "Gheorghe Lazar" monument in Sibiu, or the monument dedicated to "Mircea the Elder" at the Central Military Museum in Bucharest. One could not miss in this brief enumeration other large-scale compositions such as "The nation’s heroes" –marble and bronze in Saveni- Botosani, or "Glory to the Romanian soldier", raised in Cluj. We are talking about a monument sculptor to whom the history was - as to many other sculptors , a permanent source of inspiration. What set aside Radu Aftenie was the original approach to structure and his inclination towards a massive representation of the human body. His often-unusual compositional findings refreshed the dull and emotionless monumentalizing line so specific to 80s in Romania. How long and difficult was to be the road from the rebellious carver of that period to the refined bronze sculptor exhibiting these days at Simeza Gallery, only the artist could know. Proof of his interior unrest may be the drawings covering the walls of his exhibition. Genuine introspections and projects, these drawings precede subtle plastic discourse. The theme could be the abstract vision of a human body rhythmically depicted by essentialized body elements. It is true that for this new discourse, yesterday’s carver had to choose the bronze that, with polished surfaces and guided sharp-rounded forms, offered the artist a boost in expression. But parallel to these searches already materialized in works of certain value, with few of his compositions Radu Aftenie still confesses his undiminished joy and mission of "making monuments". - excerpt from "The Civilization of the Eye – The mission to build monuments".- translated from the Romanian newspaper ORA - author Victor Nita ---- Midway between tradition and modernism… - by Ileana Marcoulesco, freelance philosopher and art critic in Houston, Texas Romanian sculptor Radu Aftenie emerged from a realist phase with renewed vitality. He was and, to a certain extent, remains a sculptor of monuments , whether dedicated, as in the past, to historical and cultural heroes of Romania or, in the present, in an abstract manner, Romania with impressive stone, Intriguingly conceived is the stone portrait of Burebista , the mythic king of pre-Trajan Dacia become a symbol of autochthonous resistance to invaders. Aftenie benefited from a number of important shows in the post Ceausescu years at well-known galleries in Bucharest, Cluj and elsewhere in the country. A recent show at Anya Tish Gallery in Houston presents his most recent pen and ink drawings , highly stylized and expressive, in a style reminiscent of the avant-garde of the twenties. The highly polished small bronzes bear titles like Tantalus, Transfiguration, Maternity, The Pianist, The Lovers, The Musicologist, and feature energetically schematized bodies in highly rhetorical and sometimes impossibly risked postures, embodying myths, while including at other times imaginative and humorous elements. The description of his works’ aims focuses on a sought harmony amidst tensions and conflicts, and the achievement of human goals, unattainable in nature alone. This mature artist is extremely productive and strikes viewers as being in permanent evolution, while retaining a solid base in his previous classical training. His dreams are of free development in an environment stimulative of experiment. ---- Radu Aftenie is one of the 10 best-ranked Romanian contemporary sculptors. While student (1956-1962) at the Academy of Arts in Bucharest, the all important Romanian contemporary artists: the strength to set apart from the master’s influence and from esthetic dogmas required by the country’s past seated at ground level. The work is titled "BUREBISTA" (king of Dacia, categorically reaches the European contemporary art "standards". Many private collectors in Europe, Asia and America enjoy one-of-a-kind exemplars coming from this remarkable artist’s work. In a more recent period of his artistic pledge, one finds the sculptor approaching the bronze , almost exclusively. His bronzes , are already sought for their outstanding "character" and ability to enrich aristocratic interiors.
