Getting a good likeness from her models is not one of Carolyn’s priorities. Getting a gesture that best represents the model’s inner feeling, is. In fact, it is quite rare to see faces in these works, for Carolyn is much more concerned with the vibration of the figure. She works out the composition with charcoal, paper and gesso. Of late, Weltman is less concerned with her computer drawings, and the unique prints that she renders, than putting it all on with paint. Working with layers of oil and gesso on 300# rag paper, she works the surface into a frenzy of texture, color and defined areas of flesh in an expressionist style.
