Show Theme: "In the Box - Out of the Box" Members of the Thousand Oaks Art Association exhibit samples of their work in "groupings" at the Thousand Oaks Community Gallery. This show's Chair encouraged its participants to feature artwork less traditional than usual and many artist members ventured out to accept the challenge. Others chose to display the best of their "In The Box" work. The show is interesting and inspiring in that it helps one to get a more comprehensive view of a particular artist's body of work The show runs through the month of November Thursdays through Sunday 1 - 5 PM. Featured artists present individual sub-shows each of those days. Check this Gallery link for a map and directions. (Click for MAP)

Nancy Azneer, a TOAA member, is offering an Artist Special price for websites. The price for members of TOAA only, is $650 for the services described in the link below. This is less than half of what I normally charge for a site of that size, so it's a great deal. I want to help my fellow artists present, market and sell their art in the most professional way possible, and I also understand how little us starving artists usually make - that's why I'm offering such a break. Creative Computing: How did you get started with microcomputer art, and what equipment did you have?
Bernstein: I got started with an Apple II back around Christmas of '78. The desire was simply to be able to paint into a television set.
Bernstein: Right. In the early '60s I had what you might call a normal fine arts career, but got tired of the--what would you call it--the elitism of the so-called fine arts. I wanted to communicate more strongly with a larger piece of society. So, after a long discussion with my wife, I decided the illustration field was the place to go. So I began doing straight illustration: oil painting, watercolors, and the like for the NFL, Westway magazine, and stuff like that. And I liked it; the money was good, but what was even better were the phone calls I received from people I knew and people I didn't know--people who saw thestuff after it was printed. I thought, "gee this is wonderful, because it gives me real feedback.".....

Learning how to document your own artwork can be time consuming and expensive. Having good quality slides of your work, however, is an absolutely essential first step in seeing yourself as a professional artist. Nine times out of ten you will not have the opportunity to show your original work. Remember that the purpose of sending slides is to generate interest in seeing the actual work. Your slides must adequately reflect the color, detail, texture, and size. Hiring a professional fine arts photographer is the best way to accomplish this. Get referrals from other artists or galleries. Always ask to see examples of the photographer's work before you hire someone. It's also a good idea to discuss their policies regarding copyright, pricing and dissatisfaction before the work begins.

Occupation: Professor Emeritus of art California State University at Fullerton California
My teaching at California State University, Fullerton, California since 1968, not only required but also permitted me to participate in the watercolor world: one man shows, group shows, regional exhibitions, and International exhibitions. Now the title of Professor of Art Emeritus at this university supports my present exploration using synthetic paper and traditional watercolor media to a new creative experience. Discovering that this area of research had not been explored was the motivation I needed. As a result, this new and unique approach to the watercolor process has generated my most recent paintings to be recognized in major exhibitions and periodicals.....

The Weisman Museum Of Art Presents "Zelda by Herself"
The Frederick R. Weisman Museum of Art at Pepperdine University is pleased to present Zelda by Herself: The Art of Zelda Fitzgerald, on view from Saturday, Oct. 15 to Sunday Dec. 18, 2005.
Zelda Fitzgerald is best known as the flamboyant wife of American writer F. Scott Fitzgerald. This exhibition includes 54 of her watercolors that were inspired by literature as well as by her life with her famous husband. They provide a fascinating look into American culture of the 1930’s coined the “Jazz Age” by F. Scott Fitzgerald himself.
Her paintings are all whimsical and at times fantastic. Subject matter reveals her appreciation of nature (landscape and flowers) and her wonderful sense of the absurd. A large group depicts fairy tales and offers dynamic reinterpretations of traditional children’s stories.
Zelda’s granddaughter, Eleanor Lanahan (who will lecture at Pepperdine on Nov. 22), describes the paintings as “theatrical. They’re like on a raised stage floor, and the characters are actors who are before you, waiting to perform.”
This is the first time this exhibition has been shown in California. This exhibition and tour was organized by International Arts & Artists, Washington, D.C.
The Frederick R. Weisman Museum of Art is open Tuesday through Sunday 11 a.m. to 5 p.m. For more information, please call (310) 506-7257 or visit the Weisman Museum Web site.

Saul Bernstein: Pixel Picasso
by John J. Anderson
When the Royal Family visited Silicon Valley a few months ago, it was Saul who was commissioned by Hewlett-Packard to do portraits of Queen Elizabeth and Prince Phillip. They were so striking that the Queen thought the computer images had somehow been produced photographically, until she was told Bernstein works using a stylus on a graphics tablet.
I managed to catch Bernstein between a speech in Chicago and a flight to Comdex in Atlanta, and got him to talk about what he does, and why and how he does it. I found him an extremely engaging subject.
