"What Matters" - bas-relief abstract painting - 2002
First in a series dealing with unification of ideas & materials - process & product - science & art - metaphysical & mundane. An ambitious project, simply stated as a theme of "holistic unification." Uniting multiple levels and layers of "reality" that is as well suited to the realm of abstract painting as most anything else. As Francis Bacon said "The job of the artist is to deepen the mystery." My abstract paintings (and landscapes, too) are an attempt to do just that, in a very inclusive fashion.
Galactic Snack #2 The Milky Way Galaxy (our home) is eating again. The enormous black hole in the center is sucking in gases and matter. Since it is 10,000 or so light-years from us, this is "occuring" during the last ice age. These sorts of space-time-mind bending events are intriguing to me on many levels - and can best be "described," if at all, in a series of abstract paintings.

Dimension and a Half - detail A very large bas-relief painting (almost 8 feet across) and very multi-leveled in content and execution. This painting detail is an intro to my bas-relief paintings. The previous title was "Dimension of Two" but that was incorrect. This is definitely one of my 2-1/2 dimensional paintings; combining 2D and 3D elements, in the way it has been painted and constructed. As for its conceptual meaning, I layer symbols to create multiple meaning paths, which are more visual than narrative.

I often use strong lines and minimally modulated colors in my artwork. A superficial reading of my intentions might lead one to assume I am simply "cartooning," or creating whimsical art. Yes, I have sometimes heard these statements, yet nothing could be further from the truth. I find some cartoons, comic strips and comic books quite interesting and some not very interesting at all.
