Renaissance Park for Chattanooga's 21st Century Waterfront Plan
Project Summary
to create a work of public art for a new wetlands park, called
Renaissance Park. Renaissance Park is located on Chattanooga's
North Shore and it completes the last phase of the bold and
transformative 21st Century Waterfront Plan that was unveiled in May
2005 ( www.waterfrontchattanooga.com ).
Renaissance Park is a 23-acre wetlands park on the North shore of
the Tennessee River and is a former industrial site across the
Market Street Bridge from Chattanooga's business and tourism
district. Through its unique design, the park will combine
historical, educational, ecological and recreational features to
meet the community's articulated vision: "create an open space that
demonstrates respect for the environment and that celebrates
Chattanooga's rich local heritage."
The commissioned artwork will celebrate and commemorate the spirit
behind the rebirth of Chattanooga's downtown and riverfront, which
began with the visionary work of the Moccasin Bend Task Force, which
20 years ago inspired Chattanoogans to return to their river, and in
doing so forged the strong public and private partnerships that have
enabled Chattanooga to experience a major renaissance.
The theme of the artwork should include one and preferably more of
the following: (1) a river city's rebirth and return to its
waterfront; (2) the historical significance of this portion of
Chattanooga's waterfront, as that history is described in
"Historical Features" on page 5 of the RFP; and (3) the spirit of
partnership and community vision, as exemplified by the work of the
Moccasin Bend Task Force.
The park is currently under construction is anticipated to be
completed in May 2006.
This RFP/National Call to Artists will result in a short list of
semi-finalists who will receive a commission of $1,500 to visit the
site and to further develop their proposals.
Project Budget: $70,000
United States.
Submission Deadline: All required materials outlined in this
RFP/National Call to Artists must arrive by March 31, 2006 at 4:00
